Why I Decided to Become a Counsellor

The reasons behind me becoming a counsellor are multi – faceted and long standing.

Early on in life, I experienced some significant bereavements; I was close to terminal illness in my family, then I was subjected to extensive bullying during my time at school.

This has meant that I have contended with mental health issues for much of my life, so I have experienced being a counselling client for a long time. I have learned resilience, compassion and empathy from sitting in both chairs in the counselling room.

I have always been fascinated by the therapy process and by psychology generally, so I already had a fair bit of accumulated knowledge before I started studying for my formal qualification 4 years ago. My previous work as a Healthcare Assistant, provided me with an amazing foundation in Bereavement Counselling, while supporting residents’ families. I also worked in both Dementia Care and Palliative Care; this job definitely taught me a lot about the existential issues that we all face and about supporting people both mentally and physically.

I love this job. I am so passionate about helping people through practising Humanistic Counselling and I love it when I can see that the process is working and that clients are starting to feel better. From going through the counselling process myself, I have been able to achieve things in my life that at one time, I would never have thought possible.
